“Every balcony in Havana has a soul of its own, its own magic and its own history that tells of the people who live on it.” Ceci is 94 and blind. The balcony is his door to the world, allowing him to participate in life outside. It’s here that he listens to the talk of passers-by, can follow what’s happening in the street. He knows when it’s time to lower his bucket to collect the shopping his neighbours bring. The bustling activity on the balconies is in sharp contrast to their derelict structural condition. In Cuba’s capital balconies are both public and private places, part of everyday life and yet a separate microcosm.

Helle Windeløv-Lidzélius studied at the Faculty of Aesthetics and Culture, Aarhus University (Denmark), from 2009 – 2011. From 2000 – 2001 she attended the European Film College with focus on documentary filmmaking. She had previously worked in project management, entrepreneurship and idea development with KaosPiloterne (ChaosPilots), and as an actress
